Oakland Shines is an exciting energy reduction program that helps local businesses manage energy costs in Oakland's downtown business area. Our goal is to have a major impact on how each business uses energy while achieving environmental benefits and attracting new business to Oakland.
Oakland Shines targets all businesses in a 120-block area of downtown core, and to achieve up to 20% reduction in energy use from 80% of businesses in the area over the next two years.
Oakland Shines offers free-start-to-finish technical assistance and cash rebates to eliminate or help defray the cost of installing energy efficient equipment from lighting changes to HVAC upgrades.
Through this program Oakland can become the national leader in sustainability.

Background

Recently, Quest and the City of Oakland were awarded a $5 million grant to initiate a unique energy saving initiative for Oakland businesses. This funding provides an opportunity to implement one of the most ambitious neighborhood energy consumption reduction programs in the country. With the rising cost of energy, Oakland Shines offers Oakland's businesses a chance to reduce operating costs and to invest savings into growing their businesses, while attracting more business to Oakland.
We're working with PG&E and other sponsors to provide financial incentives and technical support to make change easy and simple. Typical financial incentives range from 50 to 90% of total project costs, depending on which measures are implemented. Commercial accounts will be provided negotiated discounts with qualified installation contractors. Rebates will be paid directly to contractors to defray out-of-pocket costs.
